Lexmark P315 Photo Printer Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Tech firms are keen for you to add gadgets to your summer holiday shopping list, none more so than Lexmark with its latest portable photo printer.

"It doesn't make sense that consumers can take their digital cameras anywhere, but they have to wait until they get back to their home to enjoy their prints," says Giovanni Giusti, general manager of Lexmark UK.

Lexmark's latest printer makes printing 6x4in. photos a snap. Competing directly with Epson's excellent PictureMate (£127 ex. VAT), the P315 portable photo printer slightly undercuts Epson's offering and still manages to integrate a 2.5in. LCD preview screen (the PictureMate's LCD is fixed and monochrome only), but its build and output quality are equally poor. The P315 is a really disappointing offering from a company with so much printing experience.

The Lexmark P315 Portable Photo Printer, to quote its official name, is a competitively priced, compact ink-jet photo printer that prints 6x4 inch borderless photos. Obvious competitors include the HP Photosmart 325 and 375, Epson PictureMate and Canon Selphy DS700. None are significantly cheaper buy or run and on paper the Lexmark has the most features for the money. But is the Lexmark P315 a winner?

The ink jet–based Lexmark P315 ($100 street) is a little different from other dedicated photo printers. Like most, it focuses on the 4- by 6-inch photo format. And like many, it prints directly from PictBridge cameras and a wide choice of memory card formats. But don't plan on using it to print photos from your computer or even for transferring photo files from a memory card to your hard drive. The P315 is strictly a camera accessory. It offers direct printing only, with no way even to connect to a computer.

Designed for use entirely as a stand-alone printer, the P315 cannot be connected to a PC. Instead, you have the choice of printing directly from memory cards - and all the main formats are supported natively, including Memory Stick Pro and xD – or via PictBridge, using a conveniently located front-panel USB port, if your camera supports this. Unlike some Lexmark printers we have tried out in the last year or two, the P315 doesn't feel lightweight - it's solid and feels like it should last well. On the other hand, the design and finish is not in the same league as the more expensive Epson and Canon offerings.

There's more and more interest in the 'photo lab' style of printer for digital photographs. These mini ink-jet printers are designed specifically for photo printing and offer little, if anything, in the way of plain paper print. Lexmark's P315 goes one step further by dispensing with the PC altogether. You can print from a variety of memory cards or from any camera that supports the PictBridge standard, but you can't print from a desktop, notebook or PDA.
